The Boy Who Dared is written by Susan Campbell Bartoletti and is a true story based on one of the Hitler youth. The story takes place when Hitler is coming to power in Germany and Helmuth Hubener is a school boy while it is all happening. In Nazi Germany when you got over the age of 10 you were required to join the Hitler youth, a part of the Nazi party. At first Helmuth is enthusiastic about this and is very patriotic. But then the Nazi party starts discriminating and the crimes and deaths start adding up. Helmuth doesn't know if he can keep quite about what is going on and you will have to read the book to find out what happens to him!
One of the biggest reasons I find this book interesting and likable is its perspective. Reading about WWII and history was always one of my favorites but the WWII stories always seemed to be told by historical documents and political notes. What I really like about this is that it is told from the story of a Hitler youth and how everyday life of the Germans changed for the better and the worst. Not only is it told in this perspective but it is completely true. Helmuth Hubener was a real person and what happened to him in this book was real too. Now I haven't had the time to read all the book so far but from what I have read I would recommend this book highly among others I have read. I hope you like it too.
Hi, I'm Caroline from Fremd. This book sounds very interesting. I think it's very important for us as teenagers to reach out of our comfort zones and read books such as these. Thanks for the post! I hope to read this soon.
